About Alien Knife Fight, Vorvon, WE Are The Asteroid
Alien Knife Fight features bassist/vocalist/songwriter Monique Ortiz of the Boston bands A.K.A.C.O.D., and Bourbon Princess. Michael Howard is known as the bassist of Austin stoner rock band Bay Of Pigs, and backs Monique up on drums and vocals. Monique's 2-string slide bass playing along with Mike's primal, heavy handed drumming gives Alien Knife Fight their unique take on Low Rock (a term coined by Morphine front man Mark Sandman, to describe his minimal, groove-laden, slide bass-driven rock sound). In the fourteen years that Monique lived in Boston she collaborated heavily with Morphine saxophonist Dana Colley in A.K.A.C.O.D., and original Morphine drummer Jerome Deupree in Bourbon Princess. She has also collaborated with Mission Of Burma guitarist Roger Miller, and Treat Her Right guitarist David Champagne. Monique's gritty and soulful vocal stylings have drawn comparisons to Nina Simone, Johnette Napolitano, and Nick Cave. Her lyrics focus on the surreal, the subconscious, the abstract, often taking the audience on rolling journeys, like a slow train through mysterious dreams, dark landscapes, unexplained phenomena.
Duos may have come into popularity in the past decade, but Monique has been performing in the duo format for twenty years. Alien Knife Fight is a duo like no other. No sight gags, no gimmicks. This isn't music for everyone. This is music for voyagers.
