About Bill Small
A musician first and foremost. A singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, Mystiquero, entrepreneur, artist, producer, vocal coach and life coach......
I call myself a show-biz kid. Growing up in a musical household where everyone could sing, just a stone's throw from the Big Apple, I was exposed to so much music. From Sinatra and swing to show-tunes. From Todd Rundgren to Pink Floyd. Growing up in the 70's with 2 older sisters to steal records from, and FM radio, I caught the music bug bad. I transitioned from singing along to Carpenters records in my room to performing for an auditorium full of people at the tender age of 10 and I never looked back. Part of my teen years were spent learning everything I could about theater while working as a student performer and intern at The Whole Theater Company in Montclair NJ. And when I wasn't doing that I was writing songs and.....
you guessed it, playing in bands!
Man do I love playing in bands! I moved around some during High School with my family, and then on my own after graduation, and always found a band to play music with. It's been a constant for most of my life. After 2 years studying voice at at Berklee College of Music in Boston, and another couple of years living in Jersey and working in New York City, I decided to make a change. My family had lived in a magical place called Austin, TX before I was born. Both my sisters were born there. When I was very young, we used to take family vacations to Texas. It was in our family culture. I'd been hearing about all the great music there and of course, since I was in my "Guitar Slinger" phase, it's where Stevie Ray was! So I moved to Austin, TX. Along with two great friends and fine musicians from Jersey, we performed all over Austin in the early nineties as Heavy Weather.
Well, there were more bands in the nineties (Radio Thieves, Stringbones), and a solo record "Singin." There was a move back to Boston, then to Nashville, a divorce and then finally a move back to Austin in 2004. Whew! It made me tired too. II got a call from my friend Marcus Eldridge, another old friend from Texas who had recently returned from Nashville. He was having lunch with my new/old friend John Greenberg (long story), and Walt Wilkins. I heard Walt in Nashville and we met once briefly, and I was a big fan of his music. Anyway, Walt needed a band for a gig at Gruene Hall and John was kind enough to remind him that I played the bass. So the Mystiqueros were born on stage at Gruene Hall in the spring of 2006. Best band I've ever worked with. Period.
Since then, there's been more records produced and or engineered, lots of miles. lots of shows, and lots more to come. With a new solo record and a new Mystiqueros record out in the world....
I feel like I'm just getting started.
