Description
What is it about Shakespeare and summertime? Perhaps it’s that so many of the Bard’s plays were set in pastoral areas with reoccurring themes in nature. Whatever the reason though, we’re not complaining.

The Shakespeare Festival of Dallas was inspired in part by New York’s famous Shakespeare Festival. Created by Robert “Bob” Glenn in 1971, the Shakespeare Festival of Dallas is one of North Texas’ most beloved cultural institutions. In fact, the first ever production put on by the Shakespeare Festival of Dallas was a free one-man show of Hamlet. Over the years however, the festival expanded its casts, multiplied the number of performances, and developed a path for real community outreach. The producers of the festival are committed to an accessible but affordable way to introduce the works of Shakespeare into Dallas’ community. Today, the company has expanded to producing three Shakespeare in the Park experiences, two producing seasons, an age-specific learning program, and an outreach program.

The Shakespeare Festival of Dallas includes three different performance settings. One is a classic Shakespeare in the Park experience where audiences are invited to see Shakespeare in an open-air amphitheatre. Next, the festival has a program called Shakespeare on the Go! which includes four programs that are interactive with younger viewers, educating while entertaining. The last program is called Shakespeare Unplugged, which features staged readings performed all over Dallas. This summer’s Unplugged readings are Cymbeline and Timon of Athens.

When?

This year’s festival starts in early July and runs through August 2, 2009. This summer’s performances include The Merry Wives of Windsor and the Taming of the Shrew, two of Shakespeare’s most cherished comedies. One of the greatest things about a Shakespeare play is how often they are taken out of context and placed in a new time period, where we think you’ll find that the storylines work just as well. The Merry Wives of Windsor is getting an upgrade to “The Merry Wives of Windsor, TX” and the Taming of the Shrew will be placed in a spaghetti western style.

The Cost

Not much. Tickets for performances set in the Amphitheatre are $10 bucks a pop.
